The San Antonio Composting Project began in 2021 with a simple mission: to fight food waste and make composting more accessible to our community. What started as a grassroots effort to keep kitchen scraps out of landfills quickly grew into a vibrant community of eco-conscious neighbors, businesses, and volunteers working together for a more sustainable future.

Our Mission Statement

Our mission as a 501(c)(3) non-profit is to reduce waste, especially food waste by connecting local organizations and businesses with a network of dedicated volunteers who collect, compost, and redistribute materials, promoting sustainability and waste reduction in our communities. We strive to be a reliable, free, and accessible resource for all who wish to participate in our mission to minimize landfill and food waste. Through collaboration and community engagement, we aim to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and social awareness by providing essential resources and education to our members and volunteers. We are committed to maintaining a zero-fee, volunteer-driven platform that upcycles usable materials.

Through partnerships, education, and hands-on action, we’ve built a network committed to reducing waste, enriching soil, and strengthening San Antonio’s environmental future—one bucket at a time.

Reducing Waste in Schools

We partner with schools to turn cafeteria waste into a valuable resource. By installing worm bins and garden beds on-site, students and staff can compost their food scraps—like fruit peels and veggie leftovers—right on campus. These systems serve as both educational tools and sustainable waste solutions, transforming school waste into nutrient-rich compost for school gardens.

Our community network is the backbone of our composting mission. Volunteers across San Antonio host drop-off and pick-up locations, making it easy for residents to contribute food scraps and pick up materials for their home composting needs. By participating, you're helping create a community-powered compost system that keeps valuable resources out of the landfill and in the soil where they belong.

We help local restaurants, cafés, and growers reduce their environmental footprint by collecting compostable materials like kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, and spent mushroom blocks. Instead of ending up in a landfill, this organic waste is composted and returned to the earth, supporting a healthier food cycle for our entire community.

Funding Our Mission

Our work is made possible through generous donations and grant funding. These funds allow us to provide schools with composting tools like worm bins and raised garden beds—often at no cost. They also cover essential supplies like worms, buckets, and educational materials. Every dollar helps grow our impact, one compost project at a time.
